QLT's proprietary punctal plug drug delivery technology is a minimally invasive drug delivery system we are developing with the goal of delivering a variety of drugs to the eye through controlled sustained release to the tear film. The platform technology builds upon a well-known ocular device, punctal plugs, which are placed in the tear duct, or punctum, of the eye in a simple office procedure routinely performed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Punctal plugs have been traditionally used to block the drainage of tears in patients with dry eye syndrome and the dry eye components of various ocular surface diseases. Our goal is to develop a drug delivery system comprising a proprietary punctal plug designed to be retained for the desired treatment duration and a proprietary drug delivery core that can be tailored to deliver a wide range of therapeutic agents over different time periods. We are currently targeting the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
